Prices and availability for Albania come through our partner network, Localrent. Your booking completes on the partner's secure checkout.

Albania is a country for drivers, because the best of it, the Riviera beaches below Llogara, the stone towns of Gjirokaster and Berat, and the alpine valleys in the north, is only reachable by road. The main highways have improved a great deal, but mountain routes are still narrow and slow, and local driving habits take a little getting used to. Most travellers start at Tirana airport, with Sarande and the Riviera also selectable, and the cars listed here are from Albanian companies at their live prices.

Renting a car in Albania: common questions

How long does it take to get from Tirana to the Riviera?

Longer than the map suggests. The coastal road over the Llogara pass is beautiful but winding, so budget most of a day from Tirana to Himare or Sarande with stops. If your holiday is all about the southern beaches, consider picking up in Sarande instead, which is also handy if you arrive by ferry from Corfu.

What sort of car should I choose for Albania?

A car with reasonable ground clearance is useful, because side roads to beaches and villages are often unpaved or potholed, though a normal hatchback copes fine on the main routes. Stick to daylight for mountain driving, allow extra time, and check the conditions per car if you plan to head into rougher terrain.

What licence do I need?

A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.

Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?

Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Albania, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.
