Where should I base myself in the Algarve?
Lagos and the west for cliffs, coves and day trips to Sagres, Albufeira and the central strip for beaches and nightlife, Tavira and the east for a quieter coast, the Ria Formosa and short runs into Spain. Faro airport sits in the middle of the coast, so any base is a comfortable drive along the motorway.
What car suits the Algarve's roads?
A compact does everything: the motorway is easy, the old-town streets in Lagos, Tavira and Silves are narrow and parking near popular beaches is tight. Choose an automatic if you want a relaxed drive on the hilly back roads, and only size up for a group with luggage.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions.
