Amman is a hill city stacked over seven and then some ridges, with steep, one-way streets in the old centre and wide multi-lane roads and roundabouts linking the newer western districts. In the city itself a car is more chore than treat, so the real reason to rent is what lies beyond it: the Dead Sea an hour downhill, Jerash to the north, Madaba and the King's Highway on the way to Petra and Wadi Rum. Our partner network compares local and international rental companies with live prices.

Renting a car in Amman: common questions

Do I need a 4x4 for Jordan?

Not for the classic route. Amman, the Dead Sea, Jerash, Madaba, Petra and the Desert Highway are all sealed roads and a standard saloon or small SUV copes fine. A 4x4 only earns its keep for desert tracks around Wadi Rum, and most travellers do that part with a local guide rather than their hire car.

Where should I pick the car up, the airport or the city?

Queen Alia airport is south of Amman on the Desert Highway, which is exactly the direction of Petra and the Dead Sea road. If you plan a few days in the city first, pick up in town when you leave so you skip several days of parking hassle and city driving, then head south from there.

What licence do I need?

A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.

Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?

Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Amman, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.

Where does the booking actually happen?

You search from this page and see live cars and prices on our partner’s site. When you choose one, the booking completes on their secure checkout, where you confirm the details and receive your voucher. Show the voucher at the desk on pick-up.
