Auckland is a sprawling city built on isthmuses and harbours, and its motorways clog badly in weekday rush hours, so a car is not for the city centre, where parking is expensive and the ferry to Waiheke is easier. It is for everything around it: the black-sand surf beaches at Piha and Muriwai, the Coromandel Peninsula, the Bay of Islands to the north and the road south to Rotorua and Taupo. Our partner network compares local and international rental companies with live prices.

Renting a car in Auckland: common questions
Should I pick up the car at Auckland Airport or in the city?
If you are heading straight out of town, the airport is easiest and avoids city traffic entirely. If you are spending a few days in the centre first, stay car-free, then collect from a city or suburban depot the morning you leave. Central hotels charge for parking, so those days are cheaper without wheels.
What is driving like beyond Auckland?
Once clear of the motorways, roads become two-lane, winding and slower than the map suggests, especially on the Coromandel and the west coast. A normal car is fine almost everywhere, but a bit of extra power helps on the hills, and gravel stretches to remote beaches may be excluded, so check the conditions shown per car.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?
Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Auckland, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.
Where does the booking actually happen?
You search from this page and see live cars and prices on our partner’s site. When you choose one, the booking completes on their secure checkout, where you confirm the details and receive your voucher. Show the voucher at the desk on pick-up.
