Bergamo's airport is the low-cost gateway to northern Italy, and most people renting here are not staying in Bergamo but driving on: to Lake Iseo and the Franciacorta vineyards, to Lake Como or Garda, to the Valtellina and the Dolomites, or into Milan. The city itself is small, with the walled Citta Alta closed to most traffic and reached on foot or by funicular from the lower town. Roads out are motorway or good valley road, with mountain switchbacks once you turn north. Our partner network compares local and international rental companies with live prices.

Renting a car in Bergamo: common questions

Is Bergamo a good place to start a lakes or mountains trip?

Yes, arguably better than Milan. The airport sits right on the motorway, so Iseo and Franciacorta are close, Garda and Como are an easy morning's drive, and the Bergamasque valleys lead straight up into the Orobie Alps. You avoid Milan's ring roads completely, which on a Friday evening in summer is worth a great deal.

Can I drive into Bergamo's old town?

Not usefully. The Citta Alta is a walled hill town with a restricted zone, narrow lanes and almost no parking, so leave the car in the lower town or your hotel's parking and take the funicular up. The lower town and the airport are easy to drive, and the old town is best enjoyed on foot in the evening after day-trippers have left.

What licence do I need?

A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.

Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?

Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Bergamo, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.

Where does the booking actually happen?

You search from this page and see live cars and prices on our partner’s site. When you choose one, the booking completes on their secure checkout, where you confirm the details and receive your voucher. Show the voucher at the desk on pick-up.
