Bordeaux's centre is a tram-and-bicycle city with a broad riverfront that is far nicer on foot, so the car is for the vineyards. The Médoc runs north along the estuary, Saint-Émilion and the Entre-Deux-Mers lie east, and the Atlantic coast, Arcachon and the Dune du Pilat are an easy drive west through pine forest. Roads between the châteaux are narrow, quiet and well signed. Our partner network compares local and international rental companies with live prices.

Renting a car in Bordeaux: common questions
Should I pick up at the airport or the station?
Mérignac airport sits on the west side of the city, handy for Arcachon and the coast. Saint-Jean station is south of the centre and works well if you arrived by train from Paris and want to head straight to Saint-Émilion or the Médoc. Either avoids driving through the pedestrianised centre, which is the main thing.
When is the best time to drive the wine country?
September and early October are harvest, when the vines turn and the estates are busy but the roads are still quiet. Late spring is green and mild. In July and August the coast road to Arcachon and the Dune du Pilat gets slow on weekends, so leave early or go midweek. Winter is calm and many châteaux still take visitors by appointment.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?
Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Bordeaux, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.
Where does the booking actually happen?
You search from this page and see live cars and prices on our partner’s site. When you choose one, the booking completes on their secure checkout, where you confirm the details and receive your voucher. Show the voucher at the desk on pick-up.
