Budapest is a city you walk, tram and metro, and a car in the centre is mostly a parking problem: the inner districts are paid zones, many streets are one way or tram only, and the bridges bottleneck at rush hour. Where a car earns its place is beyond the ring road, for the Danube Bend towns of Szentendre, Visegrad and Esztergom, the lake at Balaton, the wine cellars of Eger and the plains of the Puszta. Our partner network compares local and international rental companies with live prices.

Renting a car in Budapest: common questions
Is it worth having a car in Budapest?
For the city itself, no. Public transport reaches every sight and street parking in the centre is paid, hunted and metered by district. Rent for the days you leave: the Danube Bend is a comfortable loop, Balaton is a clear run west on the motorway, and Eger or Tokaj make an easy overnight. Many travellers pick up at the airport at the end of their city stay.
When is the best time to drive around Hungary?
May, June and September give warm weather, open cellars and lighter traffic on the Balaton roads. July and August are hot and the lake resorts fill, so book the car earlier and expect slow Friday and Sunday traffic on the M7. Winter driving is fine on the motorways but the Danube Bend and hill roads can be icy from December to February.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?
Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Budapest, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.
Where does the booking actually happen?
You search from this page and see live cars and prices on our partner’s site. When you choose one, the booking completes on their secure checkout, where you confirm the details and receive your voucher. Show the voucher at the desk on pick-up.
