Do I need a car if I am staying in the hotel zone?
Not for the hotel zone itself, which has buses and taxis. A car makes sense once you want the cenotes around Puerto Morelos, the ruins at Cobá or Tulum, or a day at a beach club south of Playa del Carmen, because those trips by tour or taxi add up quickly and tie you to their timetable. Many people rent for part of the stay rather than all of it.
What is driving like on Highway 307 and around Tulum?
The highway is a wide, straight road and easy to follow. The things to watch are topes at every town entrance, police checkpoints where you slow and are usually waved through, and the narrow, busy beach road in Tulum where parking is scarce. Insurance terms in Mexico differ from Europe and vary by company, so read the per-car conditions before you book.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions.
