Cape Town drives on the left on good roads, and a car is the normal way to see the Cape, since the best of it lies outside the city along Chapman's Peak Drive, down the peninsula to Cape Point and out to the Winelands around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. Distances are short but the scenery makes them slow, and the city's freeways get busy at commuter hours. Our partner network compares local and international rental companies at the airport and in the city, with live prices.

Renting a car in Cape Town: common questions
Where should I base myself with a car?
The City Bowl and Sea Point put you close to Table Mountain and the Waterfront with easy access to the freeways. Staying on the Atlantic side in Camps Bay or down the peninsula in Simon's Town suits beach and Cape Point days, and the Winelands are a comfortable day trip from any of them.
What car do I need for Chapman's Peak and Cape Point?
Any small car handles them, as both routes are paved and well maintained. Chapman's Peak Drive is a toll road that closes in bad weather or after rockfalls, so check its status on the day. Pick something with a bit more space if you plan the longer drive along the Garden Route.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?
Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Cape Town, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.
Where does the booking actually happen?
You search from this page and see live cars and prices on our partner’s site. When you choose one, the booking completes on their secure checkout, where you confirm the details and receive your voucher. Show the voucher at the desk on pick-up.
