Which airport should I fly into?
Heraklion serves the centre and east of the island, Chania serves the west. Both have rental desks and meet-and-greet pick-ups, so choose the one closest to where you are staying and pick the matching pick-up point when you search.
What kind of car suits Crete?
A small car is fine for the coast road and the towns, and easier to park in old harbour quarters. If you plan to reach the south coast, the Lasithi plateau or gorge trailheads, a slightly larger car with more ground clearance is more comfortable on the winding mountain roads.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions.
