Fez has the largest car-free medina in the world, and that is the first thing to understand about driving here: you park outside the walls and walk in. Where a car pays off is the country around it, the imperial city of Meknes, the Roman site at Volubilis, the cedar forests and Barbary macaques around Ifrane and Azrou, and the long, beautiful drive south over the Middle Atlas towards the desert. Pick up at Fez airport or in the Ville Nouvelle. Our partner network compares local and international rental companies with live prices.

Renting a car in Fez: common questions

Is it worth having a car while staying in the medina?

Only if you plan day trips. Riads inside the medina have no car access, so you leave the vehicle in a guarded car park at one of the gates and carry bags in. Many travellers stay car-free in the medina for a few days, then pick up at the airport or the Ville Nouvelle to drive to Meknes, Ifrane or on towards Merzouga.

What car do I need for the Middle Atlas and the road south?

The main roads are paved and a normal car copes, but the mountain passes are long and slow with sharp bends, and winter brings snow around Ifrane. Choose something with enough power for climbing and check the conditions shown per car for unpaved tracks near the desert. In summer, air conditioning matters more than size.

What licence do I need?

A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.

Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?

Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Fez, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.

Where does the booking actually happen?

You search from this page and see live cars and prices on our partner’s site. When you choose one, the booking completes on their secure checkout, where you confirm the details and receive your voucher. Show the voucher at the desk on pick-up.
