Guatemala City is where the flights land, and for most travellers the car is for leaving it: the road west climbs to Antigua within about an hour, then continues to Lake Atitlan and the highland markets around Chichicastenango. City driving is heavy, with chicken buses, unmarked lanes and roundabouts that run on nerve, so plan to pick up at the airport and head straight out rather than exploring the capital by car. Our partner network compares local and international rental companies with live prices.

Renting a car in Guatemala City: common questions
Should I drive in Guatemala City itself?
Only if you must. Traffic is slow and assertive, parking is mostly in guarded lots, and the sights in the historic centre and Zona 10 are easier by taxi or ride app. The car makes sense for the day you leave for Antigua, Atitlan or the highlands, so time your pick-up for the morning you go and avoid the evening rush.
What kind of car suits the roads outside the city?
The main highways to Antigua, Atitlan and the coast are paved, so a compact car copes. Roads to villages around the lake and into the Cuchumatanes get steep and rough, with unpaved sections after rain between May and October, and there a small SUV with better ground clearance is the more comfortable choice. Check the conditions shown per car for any road restrictions.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?
Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Guatemala City, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.
Where does the booking actually happen?
You search from this page and see live cars and prices on our partner’s site. When you choose one, the booking completes on their secure checkout, where you confirm the details and receive your voucher. Show the voucher at the desk on pick-up.
