Where should I base myself if I have a car?
Stay in the city if you want the bazaar, the Kordon waterfront and the food, and treat the car as your ticket out to Ephesus, Sirince and Pamukkale. If beaches matter more, base in Cesme or Alacati and drive into Izmir once for a day. The motorway between them is quick and well signed.
What is parking like in Izmir?
Street parking in Alsancak and Konak is tight and often attended, so most drivers use the paid car parks near the Kordon and walk. Hotels outside the centre usually have their own spaces. In Cesme and Alacati, summer evenings mean parking on the edge of the village and walking in, which is normal and not far.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
