Katowice sits at the centre of the Silesian conurbation, a dense cluster of towns joined by motorways and ring roads, so a car here is less about the city and more about everything around it. Within an hour or two you can be at Auschwitz, the old town of Krakow, the Wieliczka salt mine or the Tatra foothills. Traffic in the centre is heavy at rush hour but parking is easier than in Krakow, and our partner network compares local and international rental companies with live prices.

Renting a car in Katowice: common questions
Is Katowice a good base for visiting Krakow and the mountains?
Yes. Katowice airport is often cheaper to fly into than Krakow and the A4 motorway runs straight east to the city. For the Tatras and Zakopane you head south through Bielsko-Biala, which is a slower road but a prettier one. A small hatchback is fine for all of it, with an automatic if you prefer, and check the conditions shown per car for cross-border use if you plan to dip into Czechia or Slovakia.
Is driving in central Katowice difficult?
Not especially. The city was rebuilt around wide roads and a ring of expressways, so getting in and out is straightforward. Paid parking applies in the centre on weekdays with meters and app payment, and most hotels have their own spaces. Spodek and the Silesian Museum area have large car parks if you are visiting the cultural zone.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?
Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Katowice, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.
Where does the booking actually happen?
You search from this page and see live cars and prices on our partner’s site. When you choose one, the booking completes on their secure checkout, where you confirm the details and receive your voucher. Show the voucher at the desk on pick-up.
