Kos is one of the flatter Greek islands, with a straight main road running the length of it from Kos Town past the airport to Kefalos in the south-west, and gentle side roads to the beaches. Driving is calm, distances are short, and a car gets you to Kefalos Bay, the Zia mountain villages and the Therma hot springs without sharing the road on a scooter in the sun. Our partner network compares local and international rental companies with live prices for pick-up at the airport or in Kos Town.

Renting a car in Kos: common questions
Do I really need a car on Kos, or is a scooter enough?
Scooters are everywhere, but the road from Kos Town to Kefalos is long, exposed and windy in the afternoons, and the climb to Zia is steeper than it looks. A small car keeps you out of the sun, carries beach kit and gets the whole group to the south-west in comfort. It is also the easier option if you are not used to two wheels.
Where should I base myself on Kos?
Kos Town or the coast just outside it is closest to the airport, the ferries and the evening restaurants, and everywhere on the island is within an hour by car. Kefalos is quieter and right on the best beaches but a long drive from town, so it suits people who plan to stay south most days and drive up once or twice.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?
Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Kos, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.
Where does the booking actually happen?
You search from this page and see live cars and prices on our partner’s site. When you choose one, the booking completes on their secure checkout, where you confirm the details and receive your voucher. Show the voucher at the desk on pick-up.
