Prices and availability for Kuala Lumpur come through our partner networks, EconomyBookings and Discover Cars. Your booking completes on the partner's secure checkout.

Kuala Lumpur is a city built around expressways and flyovers, and a car makes most sense once you leave the centre: the highway down to Melaka, up to the Cameron Highlands and Ipoh, or across to the east-coast beaches. Inside the city, traffic is heavy at rush hour and most people ride the trains and hail rides instead. Our partner network compares local and international rental companies with live prices.

Renting a car in Kuala Lumpur: common questions

Is it worth having a car in the city itself?

For the centre, no. KLCC, Bukit Bintang and Chinatown are well served by the MRT, LRT and monorail, and ride-hailing is cheap and everywhere. Pick the car up on the day you plan to drive out of town, or collect at KLIA and head straight onto the expressway rather than into the centre.

Which pick-up point works best, the airport or downtown?

KLIA and KLIA2 share the same rental area and sit south of the city with direct expressway links in every direction, so they suit trips to Melaka, the Highlands or the east coast. Downtown pick-ups suit travellers who have already spent a few days in the city and want to start their road trip from the hotel.

What licence do I need?

A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.

Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?

Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Kuala Lumpur, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.

Where does the booking actually happen?

You search from this page and see live cars and prices on our partner’s site. When you choose one, the booking completes on their secure checkout, where you confirm the details and receive your voucher. Show the voucher at the desk on pick-up.
