Where is the best place to base myself on Lanzarote?
Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca have most of the accommodation and are close to the airport, and both put Timanfaya and the wine country within an easy drive. For a quieter stay, Costa Teguise or the north around Arrieta and Haría give you the surf coast and the Manrique sites without the resort crowds.
Do I need anything bigger than a small car?
No. Roads are smooth and well signed, distances are short and traffic is light outside the resorts, so a compact car is perfect. Only consider a larger vehicle if you are travelling with surfboards or a family, and note the ferry to Fuerteventura from Playa Blanca, checking the conditions shown per car before taking a rental across.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions.
