A standard car handles the corridor highway and the road up to Todos Santos with no trouble. If you want the East Cape beaches or the dirt tracks towards Cabo Pulmo, a higher-clearance SUV is far more comfortable on the washboard sections. Should I base myself in Cabo San Lucas or San José del Cabo?
Cabo San Lucas is the marina, the nightlife and the boat trips. San José del Cabo is calmer, with a colonial centre, galleries and the Thursday art walk in winter. With a car, either works: the corridor between them is a short drive and the airport is closer to San José.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions.
