Prices and availability for Madrid come through our partner networks, EconomyBookings and Discover Cars. Your booking completes on the partner's secure checkout.

Madrid sits in the middle of Spain, ringed by the M-30 and M-40 motorways and threaded by radial roads that lead out to Toledo, Segovia, Ávila and the Sierra de Guadarrama. Inside the city a car is more burden than help, with a low-emission zone in the centre and street parking that is metered and scarce, so the point of renting here is the region rather than the boulevards. Our partner network compares local and international rental companies with live prices.

Renting a car in Madrid: common questions

Should I pick up in the city centre or at Barajas airport?

Barajas is the easier choice if you are heading straight out of town, since the airport sits on the M-40 with fast links to every radial motorway. If you are spending a few days in the centre first, book a car from a city desk for the day you leave and avoid paying for parking while it sits unused.

What kind of car works best for day trips from Madrid?

Any compact or mid-size car copes well with the motorways to Toledo and Segovia and the mountain road over the Guadarrama passes. Go a size larger only if you are carrying four adults and luggage, and check the conditions shown per car if you plan to cross into Portugal on a longer loop.

What licence do I need?

A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.

Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?

Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Madrid, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.

Where does the booking actually happen?

You search from this page and see live cars and prices on our partner’s site. When you choose one, the booking completes on their secure checkout, where you confirm the details and receive your voucher. Show the voucher at the desk on pick-up.
