What kind of car suits Mallorca's roads?
The motorway and the flat centre take anything, but the Tramuntana road and the lanes into Soller, Deia and Fornalutx are narrow with tight bends and few passing places. A small or compact car is easier to drive there and far easier to park, which matters more than horsepower on this island.
Where should I base myself with a car?
Palma and the south coast put you next to the motorway network and the airport. The Tramuntana villages are prettier but parking is scarce in summer, so leave the car at the edge of Soller or Deia and walk in. The east coast around Cala d'Or and Porto Cristo is quieter and has easier parking at the coves.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?
