Malta drives on the left, and the whole island fits inside an hour's drive, so the challenge is not distance but narrow village streets, roundabouts and finding somewhere to park near the coast. Valletta's centre is best left on foot from a car park outside the walls, while the north-west beaches, the Dingli cliffs and the Gozo ferry at Cirkewwa all reward having your own wheels. Our partner network compares local and international rental companies at Malta airport with live prices.

Renting a car in Malta: common questions

What car suits Malta's roads?

Small. Village lanes in the south and centre are tight, on-street parking in Sliema and St Julian's is scarce, and a compact automatic makes left-hand driving easier if you are used to the right. Only go bigger if you are a group with luggage.

Can I take the car to Gozo?

The ferry from Cirkewwa carries cars and the crossing is short, but each rental company sets its own rule on ferries and island cover, so check the conditions listed with the car before you book. Many visitors leave the car in Malta and hire a second one at Mgarr for the day.

What licence do I need?

A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.

Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?

Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Malta, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.

Where does the booking actually happen?

You search from this page and see live cars and prices on our partner’s site. When you choose one, the booking completes on their secure checkout, where you confirm the details and receive your voucher. Show the voucher at the desk on pick-up.
