Can I drive right to the beaches?
Mostly to a car park and then on foot. Some southern beaches limit car access in summer and run shuttle buses from car parks further up the lane, and the northern coves have unpaved final stretches. Arrive early, follow the signs at the lane entrance and expect a short walk down to the best ones.
Should I stay in Mahon or Ciutadella?
Mahon is next to the airport and closer to the eastern and northern coves. Ciutadella is prettier for evenings and closer to the famous southern beaches around Macarella and Son Saura. The drive between them along the main road is short, so with a car either works and many people split the week.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
