Milan is a city for the metro and trams, not a hire car: the centre is a camera-controlled charging zone, parking is scarce and colour-coded by street, and the ring roads jam morning and evening. A car makes sense for what lies around it, the lakes at Como, Maggiore and Garda, the Franciacorta vineyards, the Alpine passes in summer and the ski roads in winter, all within a couple of hours. Pick up when you are ready to leave town. Our partner network compares local and international rental companies with live prices.

Renting a car in Milan: common questions
Which Milan airport should I rent from?
Malpensa is the big intercontinental airport to the north-west and the natural start for Lake Maggiore, Como and the Alps. Linate sits east of the centre and is handy if you are heading to Bergamo, Brescia or Garda. Both have rental desks, and the city-centre stations also offer pick-up, though leaving Milan by car from the centre is slower than from either airport.
Is driving around the lakes easy?
The lakeside roads are narrow, twisting and busy from June to September, and villages like Bellagio and Varenna have very little parking. A compact car is far easier than anything large, and arriving early in the day or staying somewhere with its own parking takes most of the stress out. In winter the mountain passes above the lakes close, so check the route before you go.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?
Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Milan, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.
Where does the booking actually happen?
You search from this page and see live cars and prices on our partner’s site. When you choose one, the booking completes on their secure checkout, where you confirm the details and receive your voucher. Show the voucher at the desk on pick-up.
