Where should I pick up the car?
Tivat airport sits right on the Bay of Kotor, so it is the natural starting point for the coast and for Kotor itself. If you are landing in the capital, choose Podgorica instead; it is closer to the Durmitor road and the lake. Budva, Kotor and Bar are also selectable if you arrive by bus or boat.
What kind of car suits Montenegro?
Something compact. The old towns and coastal villages have narrow streets and scarce parking, and the mountain roads to Durmitor and the Tara canyon are steep, with tight bends. Choose an automatic if you are not used to hill starts, and a slightly larger engine if you plan to spend most of your time inland rather than on the coast.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
