Driving in Naples itself is intense and best skipped, but the region around it is made for a car: Pompeii and Herculaneum, the road up Vesuvius, the Sorrento peninsula and the long quiet coast of the Cilento to the south. The Amalfi coast road is narrow, slow and crowded in summer, with buses taking up the full width on the bends, so time it early or late. Our partner network compares local and international rental companies with live prices at the airport and in town.

Renting a car in Naples: common questions

What kind of car suits the Amalfi coast road?

The smallest one you can live with. The road is single-lane in places, parking in Positano and Amalfi is scarce and priced by the hour, and a compact lets you pass the buses on the bends without folding a mirror. The coast road also has summer traffic restrictions for visiting cars on peak days, and the rules change from year to year, so check the current position with the rental company at pick-up and read the conditions on each car.

Where should I base myself?

Sorrento or a village on its peninsula works well: Pompeii, Vesuvius and the Amalfi road are all within an hour, and you can leave the car and take the ferry to Capri. For the Cilento and Paestum, base further south near Agropoli, where the roads open up and the beaches empty out. Naples is best seen by train from either.

What licence do I need?

A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.

Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?

Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Naples, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.

Where does the booking actually happen?

You search from this page and see live cars and prices on our partner’s site. When you choose one, the booking completes on their secure checkout, where you confirm the details and receive your voucher. Show the voucher at the desk on pick-up.
