Where in Paris should I pick up the car?
Charles de Gaulle and Orly are the easiest if you are arriving by air and leaving straight away. If you are already in the city, pick a station office on the side you are heading out of: Gare de Lyon or Bercy for the south-east, Gare Montparnasse for the west and Brittany, and avoid collecting anywhere inside the ring road on a weekday morning.
What is French motorway driving like?
The autoroutes are fast and well kept, and you will pass toll points on most of them, so keep a bank card handy. Traffic out of Paris is heaviest on Friday evenings and the first weekends of July and August. Several cities, Paris included, run low-emission schemes, so check the conditions shown per car before planning to drive inside them.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?
