Is it worth having a car for a Phuket beach holiday?
Yes if you want to move between beaches or explore beyond your resort. Taxis on the island are expensive and the beaches are spread out, so a car pays for itself quickly. It also opens up day trips to the Sarasin bridge, Khao Lak's quieter coast and the limestone bay at Phang Nga.
What should I know about driving on Phuket's roads?
Keep left, expect scooters on both sides of you, and take the hill roads between the west-coast beaches slowly as they are steep with sharp bends. Rain makes them slippery, so ease off from May to October. Parking near Patong and Kata fills up by mid morning, and a compact car is much easier to slot in.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions.
