Is it worth renting a car just for the Douro valley?
Yes, if you want to stop at wineries and viewpoints on your own schedule rather than a tour timetable. Trains and boats reach the valley, but they cannot detour up to the miradouros or into the smaller villages. A day or two with a car, based in Peso da Regua or Pinhao, gives you the whole valley.
What kind of car suits the roads around Porto?
A small or compact car is easiest. Douro roads are narrow with tight bends and few passing places, and village streets were laid out long before cars. Pick an automatic if you are not used to hill starts on a manual, because the gradients in both the valley and the city are steep.
What licence do I need?
