Do I need a car if I am staying at an all-inclusive resort?
Not for the resort itself, but the strip is spread out and taxis between Bavaro, Cap Cana and Macao add up quickly. A car for a few days lets you reach Macao beach, the local restaurants in Bavaro and day trips towards Higuey or the Saona boat trips from Bayahibe on your own schedule.
What kind of car suits Punta Cana?
A small or mid-size automatic is fine for the resort strip and the coastal roads, which are paved and flat. If you plan the road to Macao and the quieter beaches north of it, pick something with a little more ground clearance for the rough side tracks that lead down to the sand.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions.
