Queenstown is a small town wrapped around a lake with mountains on every side, and the roads out of it are among the most scenic anywhere: the lakeside drive to Glenorchy, the Crown Range to Wanaka, the pass over to Arrowtown, and the long day out to Milford Sound. The town centre is walkable and parking there is tight, but almost every reason to visit lies beyond it, and you can pick up at the airport or in town. Our partner network compares local and international rental companies with live prices.

Renting a car in Queenstown: common questions
Do I need a car in Queenstown or can I use tours?
For Milford Sound many people take a coach, because the road is long and the driver misses the views. For everything else, a car wins: Glenorchy, Arrowtown, Wanaka, the Gibbston wineries and the ski fields are all short drives, and you go at your own pace. Airport pick-up is a few minutes from town.
What should I know about driving here in winter?
From about June to September the Crown Range and the ski-field access roads can be icy, and chains are sometimes required. Choose a car suited to the season and check the conditions shown per car about chains and unsealed roads such as the last stretch to Glenorchy trailheads. In summer the same roads are easy and busy with campervans.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?
Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Queenstown, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.
Where does the booking actually happen?
