Which airport should I fly into?
Fiumicino is the main airport, sits by the coast and puts you straight onto the motorway network without crossing the city. Ciampino is smaller, mostly low-cost carriers, and closer to the southern hills and the road towards Naples. Both have rental desks, so choose by your flight and pick the matching pick-up point when you search.
Should I pick up the car at the airport or in the city?
Airport pick-up is easier if you are heading out of the city on day one. If you are starting with a few days in Rome, collect the car at Termini or Tiburtina when you leave rather than paying to park it, and avoid driving inside the ZTL entirely. Camera fines typically arrive months later and are passed on by the rental company, usually with an admin fee on top, so check how each company handles them in its conditions.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions.
