Saint Martin is a small island split between a French north and a Dutch south, with beaches spread all the way around the coast and no border checks between the two sides. A car lets you move between Marigot, Grand Case and the quiet eastern beaches without relying on taxis, and the island is small enough that nothing is far. Our partner network compares local and international rental companies with live prices.

Renting a car in Saint Martin: common questions
Which side should I pick the car up on?
Princess Juliana Airport is on the Dutch side and handles most international flights, so most visitors collect there. Grand Case airport on the French side handles regional hops. Whichever side you collect on, you can drive freely across the whole island, so choose the pick-up point closest to your arrival.
Is the island easy to drive?
Mostly yes, but the coast road is narrow, hilly in places and busy around Philipsburg, Simpson Bay and the airport bridge at peak times. A small car is easier to park at beaches and in Marigot. Expect a slower pace than at home, and allow extra time in the winter months when the cruise ships are in.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?
Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Saint Martin, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.
Where does the booking actually happen?
You search from this page and see live cars and prices on our partner’s site. When you choose one, the booking completes on their secure checkout, where you confirm the details and receive your voucher. Show the voucher at the desk on pick-up.
