Where is the airport and which town should I stay near?
Samos airport sits on the flat south-east corner, just outside Pythagoreio, so that town is the easiest base if you want short transfers. Kokkari and Vathy on the north coast are a pleasant drive over the ridge. Pick up at the airport and you can be at the beach within the hour.
Do I need a car for the west of the island?
Yes. Buses thin out west of Karlovasi, and the beaches around Potami, Votsalakia and Limnionas are best reached by car. The road over the mountain via Marathokampos is steep but paved. A standard hatchback copes fine, though a little extra engine helps on the climbs.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
