Santiago sits in a basin between the Andes and the coastal range, and the city itself is best handled by its metro and taxis rather than a rental car. The car earns its keep on the way out: up the Maipo canyon, over to the Casablanca wine valley and the coast at Valparaíso and Viña del Mar, or up the switchbacks to the ski resorts in winter. Our partner network compares local and international rental companies with live prices.

Renting a car in Santiago: common questions
Is it worth having a car in Santiago itself?
Not for the city centre. Traffic is heavy, several urban motorways charge electronically and parking is paid almost everywhere. Use the metro in town, then collect a car from the airport or a city branch on the day you leave for the coast, the valleys or the mountains. Check the conditions shown per car for how motorway charges are handled.
What car suits the mountain roads?
For the wine valleys and the coast any car is fine on good paved motorways. For the ski roads to Valle Nevado and Farellones in winter you want a car with decent power and clearance, and you may need chains on the climb, so check what each car allows before booking and plan to leave early to avoid the uphill queue.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?
Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Santiago, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.
Where does the booking actually happen?
You search from this page and see live cars and prices on our partner’s site. When you choose one, the booking completes on their secure checkout, where you confirm the details and receive your voucher. Show the voucher at the desk on pick-up.
