Santo Domingo is the biggest city on the island and its traffic moves to its own rules, with motorbikes threading through every gap and lane markings treated as suggestions. Inside the Colonial Zone you will want to walk. A car makes sense for the Autopista del Este to Boca Chica, Juan Dolio and La Romana, or the long run west to Barahona and the Pedernales coast, which is some of the best driving in the Dominican Republic. Our partner network compares local and international rental companies with live prices.

Renting a car in Santo Domingo: common questions
Which airport should I use for Santo Domingo?
Las Américas is the city's airport and sits on the east side, right on the motorway that runs to the beaches. If your plan is mostly the east coast, flying into Punta Cana and collecting there saves the city drive altogether. Pick the pick-up point that matches your first night rather than the capital by default.
Is a small car enough or do I need an SUV?
For the city, the motorway and the resort coast a normal hatchback is fine. If you are heading into the south-west, to Bahía de las Águilas or the mountain roads around Constanza and Jarabacoa, higher ground clearance is worth paying for because surfaces break up and rain washes gravel across the road. Check what each listing offers.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?
Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Santo Domingo, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.
Where does the booking actually happen?
You search from this page and see live cars and prices on our partner’s site. When you choose one, the booking completes on their secure checkout, where you confirm the details and receive your voucher. Show the voucher at the desk on pick-up.
