Santorini is a small crescent where the main road runs along the ridge from Fira to Oia and drops steeply to the beaches at Perissa and Kamari on the east side. Fira and Oia have no parking in their centres, so the trick is to leave the car in the outer car parks and walk in, then use it for the wineries, Akrotiri and the black-sand beaches the buses reach slowly. Our partner network compares local and international rental companies at the airport and the port, with live prices.

Renting a car in Santorini: common questions
What car is right for Santorini?
A small one. The roads are narrow, the lanes into villages tighter still, and the car parks on the edge of Fira and Oia fill with anything larger. A compact hatchback with air conditioning covers every road on the island, and the caldera-side climbs are short enough that engine size does not matter.
Where should I base myself with a car?
Fira is central and within a short drive of everything, but parking near the caldera hotels is scarce. Oia is the classic sunset spot and the most congested at that hour. Staying on the east side near Kamari or Perissa gives easy parking and a beach, with Fira and Oia a short drive up the ridge.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?
Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Santorini, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.
Where does the booking actually happen?
You search from this page and see live cars and prices on our partner’s site. When you choose one, the booking completes on their secure checkout, where you confirm the details and receive your voucher. Show the voucher at the desk on pick-up.
