What kind of car suits Bosnian roads?
A small or compact car is ideal. Most routes between towns are single carriageway with bends, trucks and the occasional pothole, and narrow old-town streets in places like Mostar and Jajce reward something short. In winter (December to March) the mountain roads to Jahorina and Bjelašnica need winter tyres, so check what the conditions shown per car say about winter equipment.
Where should I base myself for a Bosnia road trip?
Sarajevo works as a hub for the east and centre, with Mostar, Konjic, Travnik and Jajce all reachable as day trips. If you want the Herzegovina side, Kravice falls, Počitelj and the Croatian coast, a couple of nights in Mostar cuts the driving. Split or Dubrovnik pick-ups are another option, but cross-border conditions vary by car.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
