Sardinia is far bigger than it looks on the map, with three airports at opposite corners and a lot of slow, winding road between them. The coast roads around the Costa Smeralda, the Sinis peninsula and the cliffs south of Alghero are the point of the trip, and there is no bus that will take you to the beach you actually want. Our partner network compares local and international rental companies with live prices at Cagliari, Olbia and Alghero.

Renting a car in Sardinia: common questions

Which airport should I fly into?

Olbia for the north-east and the Costa Smeralda, Alghero for the north-west coast, Cagliari for the south and the beaches around Villasimius and Chia. Crossing the island from one to another can take half a day, so fly into the corner you are staying in and pick that airport as your pick-up point when you search.

Where should I base myself if I want to see a lot of the island?

Split the trip rather than chase it from one base. A few nights in the north around Olbia or Alghero and a few in the south near Cagliari covers most of what people come for, with the mountain road through the interior as the drive between them. One-way rentals between airports are sometimes offered, so check the conditions on the cars you compare.

What licence do I need?

A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.

Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?

Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Sardinia, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.

Where does the booking actually happen?

You search from this page and see live cars and prices on our partner’s site. When you choose one, the booking completes on their secure checkout, where you confirm the details and receive your voucher. Show the voucher at the desk on pick-up.
