Can I take a hire car from Mahé to Praslin or La Digue?
Usually not. Most companies keep their cars on Mahé, and Praslin has its own local rental companies while La Digue is mostly bicycles and small electric carts. Check the conditions shown on the car you are booking, and if it must stay on Mahé, return it before the ferry or the short flight and arrange Praslin separately.
What car copes best with Mahé's roads?
Something small and light. The hill roads are narrow with tight bends and steep gradients, so a compact automatic is easier to manage than a large vehicle, and parking at the popular beaches is limited. Four-wheel drive is not needed for the main routes, but a car with a bit of ground clearance helps on the rougher tracks to quieter beaches.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
