Which airport should I fly into?
Catania is the natural base for the east: Taormina, Etna, Syracuse and the baroque towns around Noto and Ragusa. Palermo suits the west, with Cefalù close by and Trapani, where the Egadi ferries leave from, about ninety minutes down the motorway. Trapani and Comiso airports also have rental desks and suit the far west and the south-east respectively. Driving from one end of the island to the other takes a good part of a day, so pick the airport nearest your first stop and choose the matching pick-up point when you search.
What kind of car suits Sicily's roads?
Something small. Town streets in Ortigia, Modica or Cefalù are narrow and parking is tight, and a compact is far easier to squeeze into a space. The motorways and the Etna roads are fine in anything, so only go bigger if you are a family with luggage. Check each car's conditions for what is included.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
