Skopje is a small capital in a bowl of mountains, with a walkable centre split by the Vardar river and the old bazaar on one side. In town a car is mostly for parking, but North Macedonia is a driving country: Lake Ohrid is a few hours southwest through the mountains, Matka canyon is on the city's doorstep and the Mavrovo national park, wine country around Kavadarci and the Greek border are all easy road trips. Mountain roads are winding and slow, so trust the map's time rather than its distance. Our partner network compares local and international rental companies with live prices.

Renting a car in Skopje: common questions
Do I need a big car for the mountains?
No. A standard petrol hatchback handles the road to Ohrid and the passes through Mavrovo without trouble, as long as you accept slow going behind lorries. Choose something with a bit more power if there are four of you with luggage. In winter the passes get snow, so check the conditions shown per car for tyres.
Should I base in Skopje or Ohrid?
Split it. Skopje suits a day or two and is the flight gateway, while Ohrid deserves more time and makes a better base for the lake, Struga and the monasteries. Collect the car at Skopje airport or in town, drive over, and if you fly out of Ohrid check whether one-way returns are offered.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?
Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Skopje, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.
Where does the booking actually happen?
You search from this page and see live cars and prices on our partner’s site. When you choose one, the booking completes on their secure checkout, where you confirm the details and receive your voucher. Show the voucher at the desk on pick-up.
