Is Sofia a hard city to drive and park in?
The centre has blue and green paid parking zones with time limits, paid by SMS or app, and traffic on the boulevards is heavy at rush hour. Most visitors leave the car at the hotel and use the metro in town, then drive out to Vitosha, Rila or Plovdiv. Airport pick-up puts you straight on the ring road and away from the centre.
What car do I need for Rila, the Rhodopes or the coast?
Any compact car handles the motorways and the paved roads to Rila Monastery and the main Rhodope towns. Winter (December to March) brings snow on the passes, so make sure the car comes with winter tyres in that period; check the conditions shown per car for what is included. For the ski resorts at Bansko and Borovets a car with winter tyres is enough, no 4x4 needed.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
