Prices and availability for Split come through our partner network, Localrent. Your booking completes on the partner's secure checkout.
Split is the best base on the Dalmatian coast for a car, because the good stops are spread out in every direction: Trogir's island old town just north, the waterfalls of Krka inland, and the long beach towns of the Makarska Riviera to the south. The coast road is scenic and slow in summer, the motorway inland is fast, and the ferry port in the centre of Split connects to Brac, Hvar and the other islands. Local companies supply the cars on this page, with prices updated live.

Renting a car in Split: common questions
Should I take the car on the ferry to the islands?
You can, but car ferries to Hvar and Brac fill up quickly in July and August and you may queue for hours. Many travellers leave the car in Split, take a passenger catamaran and hire a scooter or another car on the island. If you do want to sail with the car, check whether the rental company allows it on the car's conditions.
What is the driving like around Split?
Easy on the motorway, slower on the coast road where traffic builds up between Omis and Makarska on summer afternoons. Old town centres in Split and Trogir are largely pedestrian, so park outside and walk. A small car makes life simpler in the narrow village streets and the tight car parks near the beaches.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?
Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Split, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.
