Prices and availability for Sydney come through our partner networks, EconomyBookings and Discover Cars. Your booking completes on the partner's secure checkout.
Sydney is easy without a car in the centre, where ferries and trains cover the harbour and beaches and parking is expensive, but the city sits in a ring of places that want wheels: the Blue Mountains, the Hunter Valley wineries, the Northern Beaches and the south coast beyond Royal National Park. Pick up the car on the day you leave town and the city stops being a driving problem. Our partner network compares local and international rental companies with live prices for Kingsford Smith airport and city pick-ups.

Renting a car in Sydney: common questions
Should I keep a car while staying in central Sydney?
Usually not. Hotel and street parking in the CBD, Darling Harbour and Bondi costs a lot and traffic across the Harbour Bridge and through the tunnels is heavy at peak times. Book the car for the days you head to the mountains or the coast, and pick it up from a city branch or the airport on that morning.
What should I know about tolls and the roads around Sydney?
Sydney's motorways, the Harbour Bridge and the harbour tunnels carry tolls, collected electronically rather than at booths, and rental companies pass the charges on in different ways, so check the conditions shown per car. The roads to the Blue Mountains and the Hunter are motorway then two-lane country roads, comfortably driven in a normal compact.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?
Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Sydney, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.
Where does the booking actually happen?
You search from this page and see live cars and prices on our partner’s site. When you choose one, the booking completes on their secure checkout, where you confirm the details and receive your voucher. Show the voucher at the desk on pick-up.
