Do I need a car in Tangier itself?
Not really. The medina, Kasbah and seafront are walkable, and petit taxis are cheap for everything else. Rent for the days you leave town: the Atlantic road to Asilah and Larache, Tetouan and the Rif, or Chefchaouen as an overnight. Many travellers pick up at the airport, drive the region, and drop before spending their last days in the old city.
What kind of car suits the roads around Tangier?
The motorway south and the coast roads are in good condition, so a small or medium car is fine. The mountain roads towards Chefchaouen twist and climb, and village streets can be tight, so a smaller car is easier to park and manoeuvre.
