Do I need a 4x4 for the Military Highway to Kazbegi?
The main road to Stepantsminda is paved and a normal car copes in summer and early autumn, though a higher car is more comfortable on the rougher stretches near the pass. In winter the Jvari Pass can close and snow chains or a proper 4x4 make sense. Check the conditions shown per car before you book if you plan mountain driving.
When is the best time for a road trip from Tbilisi?
May to June and September to October give warm days, open mountain passes and the Kakheti grape harvest in early autumn. July and August are hot in the city but pleasant at altitude in Kazbegi and Gudauri. Winter is for skiing rather than touring, as some passes close and the roads can be icy.
What licence do I need?
