Renting a car in Tenerife: common questions
Tenerife South or Tenerife North airport?
Most holiday flights land at Tenerife South, close to the main resorts. Tenerife North is nearer Santa Cruz and La Laguna. Rental companies serve both, so select the airport you are flying into as your pick-up point.
Can I drive up to Mount Teide in a rental car?
Yes, the road into the national park is paved and well maintained. It climbs steadily, so a car with a bit of power is more relaxed than the smallest class, and bring warm clothes because it is much cooler at the top than on the coast.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?
Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Tenerife, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.
