Which Halkidiki peninsula should I head for?
Kassandra is the closest and the liveliest, with resorts, beach bars and easy roads. Sithonia is wilder, with pine-backed coves along a loop road that takes a full day to drive properly. The third finger, Athos, is a monastic state with no road access for visitors, so cars stop at Ouranoupoli where boat trips leave from.
Is it worth picking up at the airport rather than in the city?
Yes for most trips. Thessaloniki airport is on the south-east edge of the city, on the same side as the road to Halkidiki, so you avoid crossing the centre entirely. If you are staying a few nights in the city first, walk and use the buses, then collect the car on the day you leave for the coast.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions.
