Should I rent a car for Tokyo at all?
Not for the city. Use the trains and metro, they are faster than driving and you will not have to find parking. Rent for a specific trip out, and pick up on the edge of the city or at Haneda or Narita on the day you leave, rather than keeping a car parked for the whole stay.
What should I know about driving out of Tokyo?
Japan drives on the left, road signs on major routes are in Japanese and English, and the expressways are tolled, so ask about an ETC card when you book. Cars are typically small automatics, which suits the narrow roads around Hakone and Izu. Expect heavy traffic leaving the city on weekends and during Golden Week in early May.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?
