Toronto is a big, flat, grid-planned city with a lakefront, a subway that covers the core well, and a ring of suburbs and highways around it. Inside downtown a car is more hassle than help, but it is the way to reach Niagara Falls, the wine country around Niagara-on-the-Lake, the Muskoka lakes and the cottage roads north of the city. Our partner network compares local and international rental companies with live prices.

Renting a car in Toronto: common questions
Should I pick up at Pearson or downtown?
Pearson Airport has every major desk and puts you straight onto the 401 and 427 for Niagara or the north, so it is the sensible choice if you are leaving town on arrival. If you are spending your first days downtown, take the UP Express train in and collect a car from a city branch later, which saves parking fees and downtown traffic.
What is driving and parking like in the city itself?
Downtown traffic is slow, streetcars share the road and stop in the middle of it, and parking is metered on-street or in paid garages. Hotels charge nightly rates for parking, so check that before booking a car for the whole trip. Outside the core the roads are wide, well signed and easy, even in winter once the ploughs have been through.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?
Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Toronto, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.
Where does the booking actually happen?
You search from this page and see live cars and prices on our partner’s site. When you choose one, the booking completes on their secure checkout, where you confirm the details and receive your voucher. Show the voucher at the desk on pick-up.
